City Business Library: helping your fashion dreams become reality

Even just hearing the word ‘business’ is enough to send shudders down the spines of most start-up fashion designers. The reality is, and I’m sure you already know this, you can have a beautiful and desirable product but it won’t go anywhere if you can’t run a business properly. Being a fashion entrepreneur is about more than multi-tasking, it’s about taking on every job role required to run a business: Head Designer, Production Manager, Accountant, Sales Manager, Press Manager, E-commerce Manager… the list isn’t exhaustible.

The Resource List recently attended a very useful event designed to face those fears head on titled ‘The Business of Fashion’ at the City Business Library in London. There were some familiar names speaking at the event, like Fashion Capital, which told us we were in the right place but we were surprised to find ourselves in the heart of the financial district, an area rarely frequented by poor but fabulous fashion types. However, they were practically pleading with the budding entrepreneurs in the audience to come more often and use the library.

NegativeSpace, Positive Promotion

Dani Riot, professional photographer from NegativeSpace working with many young brands, shares some helpful advice about getting the best results from your product images.

"We see pictures and videos everyday, and most of them are trying to sell us something. With the popularity of the digital camera it has become fairly easy to produce pretty images, and as a young brand you may find that many photographers will throw themselves at you, offering you attractive quotes that seem too good to be true, and manage to part you with your marketing budgets… but there is a catch.

Blog Watch: Olivia Pinnock, Fashion Writer

I was very glad to be informed yesterday that the fabulous Olivia Pinnock, former Editor of TellusFashion Magazine, tweeter for LFW, and lovely person, has just started a new blog documenting her progress as a freelancer and dishing out useful tid-bits from her explorations in fashion and journalism. I would definitely recommend checking it out to see some examples of her recent work in such places as Stylist Magazine, Yahoo!OMG and Velvet Magazine, as well as reading her recent interview with Eudon Choi!

Bad Internships! Are you prepared?

This is a guest post from Inspiring Interns - check them out for more advice and internship listings.

With less experience of the world of work and recruitment, it can be difficult for interns to spot a bad internship before sending an application or survive one if already in the job.

The key to spotting a bad internship is in the information you receive during the application process. Getting your hands on an internship can happen in a few ways - informal contacts, sending a speculative application or responding to a job advert.

Interview ch'i. Or, how to make an impression.

Please excuse my bad language (and if bad language is something you find offensive you may not want to click on this link) but I just pissed myself laughing at this interview in The Skinny from new journo Fred Fletch, and by the sound of it so did his subject - the legendary David Hasselhoff. Now, Fred's technique may not seem 100% professional, but if you can make the Hoff laugh this hard you must be doing something right. Wanna-be writers all take note - this is certainly one way to make an impression. And, in any case, you've been working hard, you probably deserve a laugh...
